Mommas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Gas Guzzlers

I read the most important article on energy in a long time this morning. Breakthrough in solar? Nuclear Fusion? $60 oil? Hardly. Willie Nelson is backing biodiesel. For those of you who don't know, biodiesel means using vegetable oil to run trucks.

Why is this important? Bad associations with the liberal, mass transit taking, owl friendly elite are some of the major challenges to energy change in this country. If we are going to solve our energy problems, we need a cultural shift. People need to believe that we can find solutions which are not dependent on ever more drilling and burning. Biodiesel is not an ideal solution. Those vegetables are often grown with lots of fertilizer which are petroleum based so your net "carbon" saving isn't as much as you'd like. The important thing here is that it's a move in a better direction and it's endorsed by a real guy and being used by real guys in Texas. Now if we can only get Oprah on board. That would be progress.
